CHAPTER FOURTEEN

“What is it?” As Casey and Alex rushed for the car, having flung a twenty dollar bill down onto the table to pay for their meal, she was still on the phone to her boss, feeling desperate for answers.

“I don’t know myself. Just get down there. Harbor patrol is on the scene,” Warren said sharply.

They scrambled into the car and Casey hit the gas, speeding in the direction of the coordinates, wondering what on earth she would find when she got there.

The pin drop took them to a familiar place, she realized, as the road scrolled ahead of her. This was the place they’d been to earlier, the one where the charity owner, Skye Emerald, had been about to threaten a swimmer. What had happened now? She was wishing that they’d never left the scene. Had the killer been watching, and seen the police depart?

Lights were blazing down by the small harbor, at the shoreline itself. Two other police cars and an ambulance had already arrived, and Casey parked next to their cars, scrambling out and sprinting down to the scene.

A body on a stretcher was being lifted from the harbor patrol boat to the waiting medics on the pier. Under the harsh glare of the Coast Guard boat's lights, Casey saw a lock of hair tumble off the stretcher. Drenched with water, it was thick and dark red, and the sight of it gave her a pang of regret.

Was this Emerald? Had the redheaded woman gone out on the water, after everything that had happened, and all their warnings?

“Quickly. Get her in!”

As she walked up onto the pier, she was surprised by the haste with which the medics were working. Their actions were frantic, as if time was running out, and it took Casey one long, shocked moment to realize the truth.

“She’s alive?” she shouted, hearing the astonishment in her own voice.

“Only just,” the medic called back. “She’s got a pulse, but it’s weak. Severe blood loss. Deep gash in her leg. Not sure if she’ll make it.”

Stepping aside as they hustled past, Casey felt worry constrict her. She glanced at Alex. This could be a valuable lead, a critical breakthrough. She might have seen something. And having seen the woman’s spirit earlier, even if she had been defying the law with all her might, Casey was rooting for her to survive.

When the paramedics had passed, Casey walked up the pier to speak to the harbor patrol officer, who was standing at the prow of the boat, staring anxiously at the departing medics.

“What happened?” Alex asked the captain.

“We saw her by chance while we were patrolling near the coast. There’s a calm belt this time of the evening, makes it possible to see more, the captain explained. “We picked up what we thought was an abandoned boat. Rang instant alarm bells. Sailed over to have a look, and found her inside.”

“Red haired woman, dark green jacket?”

“Yes. No purse on her, no ID. My first thought was that she was taken by a shark.
